Sarcastics and Snarks: the Loves of My Life
Ok. So here it is. The first big blog. The actual blog! Yay!! You (the anxious reader) are not nearly as excited as I am, but nonetheless you are still reading... Upon my completion of the first 40 or so pages of the Catcher and the Rye, I must say that I love Holden. He is just a little snark and he has the wittiest response to everything! He swears in what I can only describe as a complete unnecessary amount. He throws in Goddam and helluva just for funsies! He is very precise with short and choppy sentences breaking up phrases. Take for example on page 34 "I was getting nervous all of the sudden, for a change. I'm quite a nervous guy." Not only is this an example of his short sentence structure, but it is a perfect example of his irony. He uses many contradictory statements, usually one right after the other. He doesn't want to be taken seriously, which I appreciate, and is a very calm guy. Not only does the guy swear for funsies; he tap dances! I laughed out loud (reader: please don't think of lol) as I read about him being the Goddam governor's tap-dancing son. He is very random and strange which I love about him. His wit and repertoire keep the book a page turner, and I am looking forward to finding some time to read this "goddam" novel! Whew! My first blog, under my belt! I think I could be so inspired as to tap-dance!

ReplyDeleteGood analysis of his dialogue so far...
I think it's interesting that he talks in those short, sometimes contradictory, sentences. They really say a lot about his character. For example: He talks about having a 'lousy vocabulary' and then uses the word 'ironical' in the next sentence. That also sort of plays into the irony of the book.
Holden certianly is an interesting character!
well, i could just tapdance too!
ReplyDeleteone thing that i think is interesting about Holden's inner dialogue is his tendency to reaffirm his statements, oftentimes, directly after. (eg. I really do. That's the truth. etc...) I wonder what that means...possibly that he views others as having the same outlook as he does. Maybe he feels the need to reaffirm all his "truths" because when he listens to others he automatically discounts almost everything as bullshit...hmmm?
well it's been fun psychoanalyzing...ta ta for now, dear!
Haha. Hannah, I do find Holden pretty amusing myself. He's a funny, straight up guy. I liked how you used his language in your post!
